Torrey Pines Beach Trail, California
Total Distance: 1.4 miles
Elevation Gain: 331 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Difficulty: Moderate
The Hike: Located minutes away from the hustle and bustle of San Diego, Torrey Pines is a little oasis that brings hikers through rolling dunes and to a picturesque Southern California beach. The beach is lined with towering, ocean carved cliffs and (if you’re lucky) you may just see seals swimming off the coast.
The hike down to the shore is via a sandy and sometimes steep path. Hikers will pass multiple overlooks that give panoramic views of the coastline, as well as the rocky outcrops that dot the dunes. Once close to the beach, the trail will travel through a steep opening in the cliffs, and drop hikers down into the sand.
The Details: Being so close to the city, this trail gets extremely crowded during peak summer tourist season. Hike early in the morning or later in the day to avoid crowds and ensure parking.
Begin at the Torrey Pines Lodge Parking and follow signs for the beach trail. After passing multiple overlooks through the dunes, follow the steep path down to the water. Although there are no lifeguards on duty, hikers are free to walk around the beach or swim for as long as they’d like. Once done on the beach, retrace your steps back up the cliffs and through the dunes to your car.
Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along the Summer Day Hike Essentials
