Shuckstack Firetower, North Carolina
Total Distance: 6.6 miles
Elevation Gain: 2,244 ft
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Difficulty: Advanced
The Hike: This rickety old firetower offers some of the best views within Great Smoky Mountains National. The climb up to Shuckstack is steep and unrelenting, but the 360 degree views at the top of the tower are a fitting reward. Located at the far end of the park, the firetower is unknown by most tourists and see’s far less crowds than other popular hikes within the park.
The most direct route to the tower is via the Appalachian Trail Northbound out of the Fontana Dam area. This means that hikers will be treated to views of Lake Fontana, Chattahoochee National Forest, and the western mountains that make up the national park along this hike.
The firetower itself is old and rickety. Climbing to the top definitely takes guts, but the views are worth any fear felt in the pit of your stomach along the way up. Bears are extremely active in this area so stay aware and brush up on proper protocol in case you run into one on the trail.
The Details: Park along Lakeview Drive in the Fontana Dam area (35°27'35.8"N 83°48'39.8"W), and begin by following the Appalachian Trail northbound up the mountain. Follow the AT for 3.1 miles until you see an unmarked side trail. Walk along this trail for .2 miles until reaching the tower. (If you walk past the Lost Cove Trail intersection on the AT, you’ve gone too far).
Once climbing the tower, retrace your steps back down to Fontana Dam and your vehicle.
Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season.
