Mayflower Gulch, Colorado

Total Distance: 6.1 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,548 feet

Trail Type: Out-and-back
Difficulty: Moderate

The Hike: Mayflower Gulch may have been the site of an old mining operation years ago, but current day is known for sweeping mountain views, wild flowers, and backcountry skiing.

The area is home to relatively easy hiking, which makes this a great hike for those still getting acclimated to the high altitude, or those who just want an easier walk in the woods. Hikers will get to explore an old mining “ghost town”, see an abundance of mid-summer wildflowers, and get to walk at the base of some of the most sweeping views in this part of Colorado.

In the winter, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and backcountry downhill skiing are all popular.

The Details: If you do not have 4wd and high clearance, then start your hike by parking in the lot on route 91.

If you have the proper vehicle and are feeling extra adventurous, drive through this parking lot and up the rough road for 1.5 miles. Once at the cabins, park your car and begin your hike (this option takes 3 miles off of your hike, bringing the total hike distance to 3.1 miles).

Regardless of where you start, continue hiking into the gulch until you reach the old mining set up in the mountain. After checking out the ruins at the base of the mountain, retrace your steps back to your car.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season. Micro-spikes, Backcountry skis, or Snowshoes are strongly advised in the winter.
