Hidden Falls & Inspiration Point via Jenny Lake Trail, Wyoming

Total Distance: 4.6 miles
Elevation Gain: 478 feet

Trail Type: Out-and-back
Difficulty: Moderate

The Hike: Hiking to Inspiration Point is the most popular destination within Grand Teton National Park. The trail takes hikers from the shores of the famous Jenny Lake, and up into the trees. The first stop on the hike is the raging 100 foot tall Hidden Falls, and hikers can stand at the base of this towering waterfall as it brings snowmelt down from the mountains above.

After walking further into the mountains, hikers will be brought to Inspiration Point, which features panoramic views of Jenny Lake, and the neighboring valley. Behind the viewpoint, is dramatic views of the beginnings of Cascade Canyon, which leads to multiple backcountry and backpacking destinations for adventurous hikers.

What really makes this hike unique is the option to take the Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle one, or both ways on your hike. The ferry drives hikers across the lake, and cuts 2.4 miles off the hike each way (4.8 total if you take the boat each direction).

We recommend taking the shuttle on the way there, hiking to Inspiration Point, and walking along Jenny Lake on your way back for a 4.6 mile hike. This gives hiker’s the best of both world’s with an opportunity to get out on the sparkling water, but also a chance to see the scenic shorelines.

This area is very active with wildlife, and is considered bear country within the park. Plan accordingly with bear spray and the know-how of what to do if you see a Grizzly or Black Bear.

The Details: For our recommended route mentioned above, park at the Jenny Lake parking area, and walk over to the boat ramp. Once boarding the boat, it will take you to the only stop, which is straight across the lake. Once there, follow signs up the mountain for Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point.

After .5 miles, hikers will see a short spur trail for Hidden Falls. After viewing the falls, continue up the trail for another .6 miles to Inspiration Point. Once you have a chance to take a break and snap a few pictures of the view, follow the trail back down the mountain, and follow signs towards the Jenny Lake Visitor’s Center. This trail will lead you along the relatively smooth shoreline of the lake for 2.4 miles back to your car.

If choosing to take the shuttle both ways, this hike is 2.2 miles total.

If choosing to hike around the north end of the lake both ways, the hike is 7 miles total.

As of the 2020 season, the Jenny Lake Shuttle is $10 one-way / $18 round-trip (adults), and $8 one-way / $10 round-trip children over the age of 2.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season. Micro-spikes or Snowshoes are strongly advised in the winter. The boat across Jenny Lake is also closed when there is ice on the water.
