Goblin’s Lair (Chamber of the Basilisk), Utah

Total Distance: 3.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 219 feet

Trail Type: Out-and- Back
Difficulty: Moderate

The Hike: This is one of the most unique hikes in central Utah – and the fact that it’s in a state park helps it slide under the radar of most tourist. Located on the secluded Eastern edge of the park, the Goblin’s Lair is a hidden cave that lies deep in the towering red rocks that surround the park. The hike leading up to the cave is relatively easy, and takes hikers past a few of the park’s famous “goblins”, past vibrant wildflowers, and around some of the most beautiful mesas and buttes in this part of Utah.

Once hiker’s are dropped at the base of a mini boulder field, the fun begins. The trail requires travelers to climb up and around these massive rocks, until it leads you to the mouth of the cave. Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, the trail drops down about a hundred feet onto the cave floor for hikers to explore.

Although the Goblin’s Lair is called a cave by most, it is actually a slot canyon who’s entrance was covered in a massive rock slide.

The Details: Begin by parking at the Goblin Valley Overlook (38°33'54.9"N, 110°42'09.8"W), and following the Carmel Canyon Loop. After about .5 miles, follow signs towards Goblin’s Lair at a fork in the trail. From there, continue for another mile until you reach the mouth of the cave.

Moderate rock scrambling over boulders is required. Caution is advised.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season.
