Canyon Rim North Trail, Wyoming

Total Distance: 7.9 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,148 feet

Trail Type: Out-and-back
Difficulty: Moderate

The Hike: If you’ve never been up to Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon, then it’s time to pay it a visit. The northern section of the park which houses the canyon is unique from the rest of Yellowstone, and the area truly lives up to its name with towering yellow and white walls surrounding a sparkling blue river. Walking along the North Rim Trail gives hikers multiple vantage points where they can view a few different perspective of the canyon – including the famous Lower Falls and Inspiration Point.

With the exception of the steep portion of this hike that leads hiker’s down to the falls lookout, most of the trail is gradual and smooth as it walks along the edges of the canyon, making this a great hike for families or a leisurely afternoon stroll.

The Details: Start by parking in the first lot along North Rim Drive (along Lower Falls). Once on the trail, you can choose to either walk the short (but very steep) distance down to the falls lookout or to view the falls from above.

After checking out the falls, continue down the trail as it traverses the rim of the canyon. There will be multiple vistas and viewpoints along the way. After reaching Inspiration Point at mile 3.9, walk down the stairs to the observation area and soak in the sweeping views of the canyon. Once finished, retrace your steps back to your car.

This trail can be accessed by multiple parking lots up and down the trail which gives hikers the ability to make this hike as long or short as they’d like.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season. Micro-spikes or Snowshoes are strongly advised in the winter.
