King & Queen’s Seat, Maryland

Total Distance: 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 656 feet

Trail Type: Loop
Difficulty: Easy

The Hike: What was once used as a ceremonial meeting place by Susquehannock Native Americans is now a popular hiking destination in Northern Maryland. The trail takes hikers straight up a rocky mountainside and right at the start of a massive rock formation that overlooks the valley. Adventurous hikers can go stand on the very edge of the rock, and look straight down to the flowing Deer Creek below.

Most of the elevation gain happens in the first 1/2 mile of the hike as the trail approaches the rock outcropping. After that, the trail leads hikers down a meandering forest path. This trail is especially beautiful in the autumn months as the area’s trees turn beautiful yellow and orange hues.

The Details: Park at the Rapids Parking Area (39°38'16.6"N 76°24'45.0"W) and follow signs for the white trail. Continue hiking upward until you see the King and Queen’s Seat. Once finished, keep hiking along the white trail for 2.5 miles until you reach the Rapids Parking lot again.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season.
