Corona and Bowtie Arches, Utah
Total Distance: 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 469 feet
Trail Type: Out-and- Back
Difficulty: Moderate
The Hike: These are arguably some of the prettiest arches in the Moab area, and the best part is that you can see them without the entrance fees or crowds at Arches National Park down the road.
The hike to Corona and Bowtie arches is incredibly scenic as the trail takes you along the edges of a sandstone canyon. Hikers spend much of the trip traversing up bare rock faces, and even get the thrill of climbing up both a metal ladder and Moki steps installed within the rocks.
Bowtie Arch will be the first arch you pass. It is a pot-hole style arch located on a cliff above the trail. After walking for a few more minutes, the trail leads hikers right at the base of Corona Arch, which is a partially freestanding arch that resembles the famous Rainbow Bridge.
Although it is possible to climb up and around to the top of the arch, PLEASE DO NOT STAND OR SIT ON TOP OF CORONA ARCH. Not only is this incredibly dangerous, but the weight of hikers weakens the structure and decreases the life-span of the arch.
The Details: The clearly marked trailhead is located about 10 miles down Potash Road, which is just west of Moab. After parking, follow the clearly marked trail and stone steps until you cross the train tracks. From there, the trail continues into the canyon. After rounding a bend, you will be greeted to sweeping views of both arches as well as the surrounding cliffs. Follow the blazes and cairns along the rock shelf until you reach both arches. Once finished, walk back the way you came.
Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season.
