The Hike: This easy walk leads hikers to one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the Catskills. Awosting Falls stands a towering 60 feet high and is truly scenic year-round. The trail follows the smooth and gradual Awosting Carriageway, and brings hikers both to the top and base of the falls for two unique vantage points.

Although swimming is prohibited, this spot of the perfect place to escape the summer heat. Cool air often comes off the ragging falls, and walking under the shade of trees helps hikers avoid the harsh sun.

Being short and relatively easy, this trail gets crowded in the summer months. Arrive early to ensure both available parking and solitude on your hike.

 

The Details: Begin by parking at the Lower Awosting Parking area within Minnewaska State Park (year around $10 day-use fee is required). Follow the red blazes along the Awosting Falls Carriageway along the river until you reach the top of the falls. From here, the trail will veer right and bring hikers down to the base of the falls. After taking in the views, retrace your steps back to the parking area.

Swimming is prohibited in this stretch of the creek.

Gear: For this hike, we recommend bringing along either the Winter or Summer Day Hike Essentials, depending on the season. Micro-spikes are strongly advised in the winter.
